Within each of these categories, we ranked the 46 fruits and vegetables and then normalized the ranks on a scale of 1 to 100, with 100 being the highest. For each food, we calculated a total score by summing the normalized rank from each metric. All categories are weighted equally, since they convey different but equally relevant information about pesticide levels on produce.

From health to costs, there are a lot of rumors floating around about the concept of "organic" that may seem simple. It required some personal experience and research to find out the truth. According to a 2019 report from the Food and Drug Administration, domestic farmers provide about two-thirds of the vegetables we consume and just less than half of the fresh fruit.


But fewer Americans say organic produce tastes better than conventionally grown fruits and vegetables. About one-third of U.S. adults (32%) say that organic produce tastes better, 5% say it tastes worse and a 59% majority says that organic and conventionally grown produce taste about the same.


But people who eat more organic foods are comparatively more inclined to say they taste better. About half (51%) of those who say most or some of what they eat are organic foods say that organic produce tastes better, 45% say organic produce tastes about the same. By comparison, fully 71% of those who do not eat organic foods at all or not too much say that fruits and vegetables grown organically taste about the same as other foods, a fifth (20%) say organic foods taste better.


The conviction that organic food is a better choice did not become widespread in the United States until the 1980s, when national media reported a number of food safety scares linked to pesticide residues on fresh fruits and vegetables. When worried consumers learned that organic farming methods did not allow the use of any synthetic pesticides (although naturally occurring poisons could be used), they demanded more organic products, along with a credible national system for certifying and labeling those products in the marketplace. Once this system began to operate in 2002, the farmers who had switched to organic methods could capture sizable price premiums for their goods, and this motivated rapid growth in the sector, but only up to a point.


Buying organic fruits and vegetables is often the best option for consumers, but rarely the most cost-effective option. However, there are a handful of fruits and vegetables where you are best off sticking to the organic options due to the large difference between organic and non-organic options.


One of the most popular fruits is actually among the most dangerous. Apples are sprayed with diphenylamine, a chemical that is banned in Europe. This chemical can also be found in other apple products like apple juice or apple sauce when purchased in non-organic forms.


When proceeding to the check out, leave them a comment to ask them not to use any plastic packaging. Bear in mind that you might still get some as some of their suppliers may have already wrapped the fruits and vegetables in plastic.


This system is the cheapest and most sustainable from my point of view as you are ordering directly from organic farmers in your area. The EWG just released its 2018 Shoppers' Guide to Pesticides in Produce, listing the 15 "cleanest" fruit and vegetables found to contain the least pesticides. In order to create the list, the EWG looked at over 10,000 samples that the USDA and the Food and Drug Administration took from popular fruits and vegetables.
